The ifwiki Interactive Fiction FAQ was created to offer succinct, up-to-date information to those who are new to IF or new to the IF community. The FAQ is intended to give brief, helpful answers to those questions that do actually come up frequently, and to direct readers to the most important online resources. While it is meant to be a useful part of ifwiki and to have current, useful links, this FAQ also should serve well as a stand-alone document that someone might read offline or print out. Another resource for newcomers that is helpful (although it hasn't been updated recently) is Roger Firth's Ifaq.

What is "interactive fiction"?
The term refers to programs (sometimes called "games" or, less often, "works") that let you type commands to a character. This character wanders around in a simulated world of some sort, usually one that is described in text. "Text adventure" and "text game" have been used to mean pretty much the same thing. Examples include Adventure, Zork, Deadline, Planetfall, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Hobbit, and Curses. Some people include graphical adventure games such as Myst when they use the term, but those sorts of games aren't the focus of this FAQ, nor are they the main concern of the IF community. The ifwiki offers a formal definition of interactive fiction; there is a longer discussion of the topic in the rec.arts.int-fiction FAQ; and other definitions can be found in various essays and books.

What happened to Infocom (Magnetic Scrolls, Level 9, etc.)?
None of the companies that produced IF during the 1980s are still around and producing IF. Infocom was acquired by Activision in 1986, for instance, and is now a (not very active) "label" of that company. Interactive fiction from this era is often hard to find outside of abandonware sites and online auction sites, although some of it has been made available to the public by the company that produced it. Plenty of people are still creating IF, however, and there are hundreds - perhaps thousands - of new games, most of which are free, that have been developed since the "commercial era" of interactive fiction.

How can I download and play IF?
The IF Archive is the major repository for free interactive fiction, and includes hundreds of recent games, games in many different languages, and many historic games. You'll probably want to download games from there, using the convenient interface provided by Baf's Guide to the IF Archive.

Authors have made some game available for you to play on the Web or download in stand-alone form. But you will usually need to download both an interpreter for your particular platform (a sort of "reader" or "player") and the particular game's "story file" (the data file that is read by the interpreter).

If you use Windows and want to run the zcode file curses.z5, for instance, you need a Windows zcode interpreter. Windows Frotz is a popular one. One you have installed Windows Frotz, you will be able to play any zcode interactive fiction just by downloading and opening the file, which usually will end with .z5 or .z8.

You can find a popular interpreter for your platform and IF format in the following table:
Where can I find out what games I might enjoy?
* Baf's Guide is a complete listing of the games on the IF Archive. Many games have capsule reviews, and there are powerful search tools to allow you to select for certain features or look games in a particular genre.
* The Usenet group rec.games.int-fiction is a good place to ask if you have specific tastes and interests that you're willing to explain.
* Interactive Fiction Ratings is a site that lets anyone rate games on a 1 to 10 scale and offer very brief comments. A list of the highest-scoring games is available. A similar site with fewer reviews is Interactive Fiction Reviews Organization.
* NEW In October 2007, IFDB, the Interactive Fiction Database, was created for person-to-person recommendations about IF games. IFDB users can edit the database of games, create Recommended Lists, associate "tags" (keywords) with the games, add reviews and ratings, etc. Its Download Adviser tool makes it easier to download and install games.
* Looking back through past XYZZY winners or games that did well in the IF Competition can also give you some idea of which games are (or were) highly thought of.
* There are several sites that collect and publish reviews: SPAG, Brass Lantern, and IF-Review are the most prominent of these.
* Several members of the community have extensive collections of their personal recommendations: Emily Short, Yoon Ha Lee, and Sam Kabo Ashwell, for example.

What can I do when I get stuck?
Some games have in-game hints(Try typing 'help' 'hint' 'hints' 'about' 'think'). For others, hints or a walkthrough (a list of commands that will win the game, sometimes annotated) may be available on the IF Archive or elsewhere on the Web. If Baf's Guide doesn't list any files for the game you're playing, search the Web for the name of that game and the term "walkthrough" or "solution." You can also ask fellow players for a hint on rec.games.int-fiction. Just be sure to include a spoiler warning and spoiler space before you reveal any details of the game, so you don't ruin the game for others by giving away some of its surprises.

How can I post a review of a game I've finished?
If you like, you can simply post a review to rec.games.int-fiction, as many people traditionally do with the Comp game after the Comp has ended. You can also submit your review to SPAG, IF Review or IFReviews Organization, or post it on your own site or blog.

What is this "IF Comp"?
The IF Competition is an annual, Internet-wide competition for short games (ones you can complete in less than two hours), started in 1996 and currently run by Stephen Granade. Anyone who is online can vote in the competition. Having played and rated five games is the only qualification necessary for judges. Recent years have seen dozens of entries and hundreds of judges: The 2004 Comp had 38 games voted on by 174 judges.

How can I write my own game?
Although some people try to develop IF from scratch in general-purpose languages, winners of the IF Comp and developers of successful longer games have shown that it can be a good idea to use one of the highly capable and free interactive fiction development systems. Inform, TADS, and Hugo are the most powerful and cross-platform of the options, but there are others. You can seek help from fellow developers on rec.arts.int-fiction as you work, and avail yourself of some of the extensive documentation, tutorial material, and sample code that is online.

Which development system is best?
No one knows for sure, but a safe way for you to decide for yourself is to review all of them at Roger Firth's Cloak of Darkness page. You should also consider the development communities for different systems, what sample code and tutorial and reference information is available for each, the whole range of these systems' capabilities (including multimedia capaibilities, if these are important to you), and whether interpreters are available on the platforms you care about.

Why not create my own IF development system?
You're welcome to, and we're all very glad that people such as Graham Nelson (creator of Inform) and Mike Roberts (creator of TADS) have done this. There are sometimes discussions about how to create IF development systems on rec.arts.int-fiction and on ifMUD's #craft channel; you can also check ifwiki's Building a New Interactive Fiction System. While some people will be glad to offer reactions and advice, many people on raif and #craft do prefer to discuss writing games, and almost all of them now are effectively using some existing system such as Inform, TADS, or Hugo. If you're developing a new system, it will certainly help to be very familiar with how all of these existing systems work, so you can imitate their better features and avoid imitating anything you think is a mistake.

It's also worth noting that with the dominance of Inform and TADS, many players will be less likely to play games written in other, less-popular languages. This is chiefly due to the bother of obtaining and installing yet another interpreter, when there are frequently many games equally as good available for the interpreters they already have. If this is a factor, then before you begin you should consider whether you're willing to trade greater exposure for programming convenience and the additional benefits of writing your own system.

How do I get people to test my game?
A very good question. It's very important to have others test and review your game before releasing it. The IF Beta Site Info Page has information about beta-testing, including links to several articles about how to helpfully test games, and it also provides a way for you to sign up as a tester and submit your game to be tested. There are several other ways to find testers. If you've tested someone else's game, you might ask them to reciprocate. You can also politely ask for testers on rec.arts.int-fiction or on ifMUD.

How do I get people to play my game?
Releasing it in the IF Comp can be a very effective way, if it fits the bill by being a two-hour game that is not based on previous copyrighted work. There are other competitions at other points in the year which are less popular but still provide good ways to release a game. If you don't release your game as part of a competition, you should announce your game on rec.games.int-fiction. Although the editors of IF review sites will learn about it from rgif, it's fine to politely bring your work to their attention by email if it hasn't been reviewed after a while.

You may also want to publicize your game outside the IF community, if there are other groups who might be interested in it: e.g., Latin teachers, if your game is in Latin; the Electronic Literature Organization, if your game is written for a literary audience; the Keeler Society, if your game is an adaptation of a Harry Stephen Keeler novel.
It inherits Inform's strong "object tree" structure in dealing with manipulation of objects (e.g., when a mug is being sent to the player, this is written as "move mug to you" ['you' being the chosen label for the player character]), as well as TADS's usage of pre-defined object classes (such as 'scenery', 'character' and 'attachable') in further defining object behavior.

Computer Novel Construction Set a.k.a. CNCS, created by Hayden Software. An obscure and arguably the first text adventure creation program for the IBM PC. Released in 1985 it is a fore runner to today's point and click authoring systems, using a series of DOS based menus and pop-up windows to create your world and all the objects and characters that populate it. CNCS gives you the power to create games much more advanced than any of the games released by Hayden Software themselves at that time.

The Computer Novel Construction Set enjoyed a short lived revival between 2001 and 2002 as some episodes in the long running Adventure Game Studio series Reality on the Norm were written in this format, breaking away from the series point and click adventure roots.

Games
The many games written in this format have all but disappeared, the ones that remain are just as obscure as their engine. Of the few still in existance the most noteable are Virgin Schoolgirl, the interactive fiction episodes of Reality-On-The-Norm and the Oz Game Collection, a series of remakes of US Gold text adventures originally written for the Commodore 64 and ported to the PC by Dorothy and Ozma Productions.

Availabilty
Originally released as a commercial title, the Computer Novel Construction Set has since been made freeware and is available from the Home of the Underdogs website.

I'm not sure where to put the Russian and Inform 6 versions of the game. (Help will be appreciated :) The IFID will be supplied later once I get a hold of the Babel software. I followed Photopia's layout more-or-less, so hopefully everything looks well. --Isxek 17:11, 29 December 2006 (EST)

* Different versions of the game are documented in the Versions section of the page. Each version gets its own subsection there. So, I would name the subsections under Versions as "Version 1.0", "Inform port (incomplete)", "Inform port (complete)", and "Russian translation" (assuming that's the correct chronological order for them). -- David Welbourn 10:20, 30 December 2006 (EST)
* The game is highly linear. It contains several easy, well-planned puzzles; however, solving some of the more-or-less independent puzzles does not necessarily advance the plot.
How It Begins
PROLOGUE: You are a baby in your mother's womb, about to be born. When you try to leave and the cord starts to strangle you, you must choose the Lion, Dragon, or Ferret to start your path towards becoming a warrior, mage, or rogue, respectively. Then you must choose either the blue or pink blanket from the midwife to determine your sex.

Eighteen years later, you are standing outside Eselatem's Keep in the middle of a large marsh. You are carrying an empty backpack and an amulet of perception which can warn you of danger.
* If you are a warrior, you also carry your longsword "Sidesplitter" and a shield. You are here on Major Belette's orders to enter the keep.
* If you are a mage, you also carry your staff and wear nine rings on your fingers. The route to getting the tenth ring—the Orbis Sapientia, symbol of the Archmage—is inside the keep.
* If you are a rogue, you also carry your dagger "Backbiter". You want to enter the keep and carry off its riches.

Notable Features
* The status line keeps track of your health (100 of 100), treasures found (0 of 27), victims released from magical bondage (0 of 18), and your turns.
* Because you can play as either a warrior, mage, or rogue, many of the puzzles have multiple solutions.
* The main NPC of the game is a nine-tailed talking cat named Threnody, and will act as your companion and as a source of hints in the game. There is also a help menu, plus solutions in separate text files.
* The tone of the game is lighthearted. Much of the scenery is of the "vague luxury" variety. Several puns are used in the game, particularly in the naming of the treasures. There are red herrings in the game.
* The game is somewhat buggy in places, and it is this that makes the game "cruel". It was not the author's intention to make the game unwinnable if you do things in the wrong order or in the wrong places, but it can happen.
How It Begins
You are Jacques, a cat who is also a detective in the San Francisco Bay Area. Your partner is Ralph, a ferret. You are wearing a trenchcoat and fedora, and carrying an empty gun. Your somewhat grubby Sunnydale office not only has a desk and a rotary phone, but also a hydraulic ram pump, a tire-balancing machine, and a platypus cleaner. (There was also a TV, but Ralph just threw it out the window.)

It's not immediately obvious what to do first, but some exploring will reveal that you're not going to get very far until you replace a missing tire on your Oldsmobile Delta 88, which is parked outside the office.

Notable Features
* Largely inspired by LucasArts' Sam & Max Hit The Road and the "Sam & Max" comics.
* There is a WINNING command which the player can use to make sure the game is still winnable.
* Sorry for that, David. Just to set matters straight then - for IF Comp games, should we get the IFID for the original release and not the post-competition one? -- Isxek 12:48, 24 September 2006 (EST)
** I have not read the rules on determining IFIDs, so I can't answer that. I assume that the IFID would be based on the earliest known release of a game, but I don't know that. All I know for sure is that an IFID uniquely identifies a game, that new versions of a game must have the same IFID as the old versions. -- David Welbourn 15:11, 24 September 2006 (EST)
** I stand corrected. David, your assumption was correct. Here's a quote from Revision 7 of the Babel Treaty (section 5.5.1): Note that there _must_ be at least one IFID: this may, of course, be an MD5 checksum. With all new IF projects, a design system should supply one and only one IFID. ==How It Begins==
You're a young ensign in the wreckage of an escape pod, stranded on the planet Runoma II. The lifeless body of your colleague lies crushed under the pod's torn door, while your lieutenant has slipped into a sleeping stupor; a spike has ground itself into his left shoulder. None of the other crew members made it.

The desert stretches away in all directions, with the wreckage of the Sirius Dream still blazing to the distant north.

You hear a faint, guttural droning.
The sequel to A Spot Of Bother.

How It Begins
You are Stavros 'The Bulldog' McGrogan, the hardest man the SAS had ever produced.

You are wearing your uniform, and carrying a blunt fork (with bits of mackerel on it), a pendant (which you can use up to three times to talk to Twiddles), and a photo of the Princess Leonora ("NOT to be killed"). You also have 63 life points. This is all you have left after some minor difficulties getting here. You are standing at the edge of a deep ravine, spanned by a shaky narrow bridge, clearly unsafe in this wind. A small bird flutters nearby.

On the other side of the ravine is your target: the Hungarian mountain fortress of the warlord Baron Grishtak. Sargeant Twiddles has ordered you to rescue the kidnapped princess, assassinate the warlord, blow up the fortress and get out in one piece.

How It Begins
You are first asked if you want to skip the introduction (y/N).

You are the youngest knight in King Dargon's service. Queen Dahra is deathly ill, and the kingdom is in turmoil.

You are standing outside a locked bronze door deep in the tunnels under the Dark Mountains. You carry only a brass lantern (very low on fuel) and a scroll (which when read, should open any lock); all your other possessions were lost or used up in the journey to get here. You were sent on this fool's quest to find and bring back the Stone of Aayela, a perfect crystal in which Heliax the Wizard supposedly imprisoned Aayela, a spirit of light, and which may be the only cure for the queen's illness.

Notable Features
The fifty-eighth Speed-IF ran from May 13th to May 15th, 2006 and was organized by N. B. Horvath with assistance from Peter Berman.

Premise
The book object text
My close personal friend N. B. Horvath has agreed to run the speedIF this weekend. Details are at http://nbhorvath.blogspot.com/2006/05/speedif-neologism.html. When you finish your game, sign below or post a comment to the blog entry.

The blog entry text
New speed-IF this weekend! This event was inspired by the beta release of Inform 7, but you may use any programming language you like. Here are the parameters (submitted, Mad Libs-style, by the denizens of ifMUD). Write a game that includes all of the following elements:
* The following new words:
** nockle, noun: The phenominally unsuccessful miniaturized French Horn, now almost forgotten.
** flugulate (floo-gyu-layt), v.i.: To run about wildly in an attempt to catch a piece of paper that has been caught up in a breeze
** zomg, noun: Sharp corners, esp. of household furniture.
* A poem of no more than six lines. The poem must contain each of the following three lines (these lines can appear anywhere in the poem, in any order):
** Only in the spring does love turn to dust.
** One thing remains, that no more monkeys roam
** With thirty waking moments to her name
* Either the Irish setter or the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen.

Deadline is Monday night, May 15. Try to spend no more than two hours coding. Post a link to your results in a comment to this post or on ifMUD when finished. Go!

Games
* Alma Mater (Roger Carbol; 13-May-2006; Z-code).
* Captain Cumshot's Second Adventure: The Rim Job (Jake Wildstrom; 14-May-2006; Z-code).
* Define Far (N. B. Horvath; 14-May-2006; Z-code).
* Expedition (Jon Rosebaugh; 14-May-2006; Z-code).
* A Minimum Wage Job (John Cater; 14-May-2006; Z-code).
* Revenge of the Nockle : A Speed IF (Josh Giesbrecht; 13-May-2006; Z-code).

Here's the release information I got from Nick Montfort's website:

Release 8 / Serial Number 040328 / Inform v6.15 library 6/10

Turns out this is another re-release. --Isxek 14:54, 13 September 2006 (EST)

*EDIT: The versions available on both the IF Archive and the Anthology section of the Inform 7 website point to the older version (before the article had been edited). --Isxek 07:31, 14 September 2006 (EST)
*I guess I was confused by what you were saying; I didn't know there were two "Release 8"s. Is the latest correction satisfactory? -- David Welbourn 19:19, 14 September 2006 (EST)
*Sorry for the confusion, David. My fact-finding ran a bit backward. Everything should be ok. -- Isxek 14:46, 15 September 2006 (EST)
Isxekhttps://www.ifwiki.org/index.php?title=User_talk:Isxek&diff=18319User talk:Isxek2006-09-15T02:14:09Z
Isxek: cleared user talk

Writing about games
Just a thought.

The Wanted Page seems to contain several links to actual game titles. Tempted as I am to write something about those games and provide more information than what is necessary ;), I suggest possibly changing these Wiki links to normal text instead. Or maybe redirecting them to Baf's Guide where they can get more info.

Thanks for building the IF Wiki!
Home of the Underdogs reviews
Question: Some IF games have review articles made by Sarinee from the Underdogs site. Would it presently be a problem if we add links to some of the games featured here already? (For example, Galatea has an article there.)

Isxek 19:20, 26 April 2006 (EST)
* Of course, Home of the Underdogs links to IF games are appropriate. You can now use the new hotu game template for this, and I have updated the Galatea and Games (style guide) pages accordingly. -- David Welbourn 21:54, 28 April 2006 (EST)

Shade write-up
Sorry about the addition I made on Shade. I wasn't particularly sure if there had been other releases. I should have just labeled it the way you described it. -- Isxek 15:09, 12 May 2006 (EST)

IFID's
Would it be OK to add in the different IFID's for the games I've played on? I've gotten the IFID's for some of the games stashed away in some text file here, so I thought I'd add it to the Wiki already. --Isxek 14:16, 13 September 2006 (EST)
*Yes, of course. The IFID should be added to the version section of a game when available, and I have added it when I remembered to do so. I'll update the Games (style guide) to make that more explicit. -- David Welbourn 16:00, 13 September 2006 (EST)
*Thanks! May I also add the IFID's for pre-Babel treaty games? Older Hugo and TADS 2/3 games, for example, have different IFIDs from those made with Inform 7. --Isxek 07:17, 14 September 2006 (EST)
Isxekhttps://www.ifwiki.org/index.php?title=Talk:Savoir-Faire&diff=18301Talk:Savoir-Faire2006-09-14T12:31:55Z
Isxek: older versions on IF Archive

How It Begins
You are Pierre, the adopted son of a wealthy Count in 18th century France. You are wearing a dashing hat, and carry a sword (inside a swordstick) and a snuffbox. As a member of the nobility, you also have the magical talent known as the lavori d'Aracne which will let you create magical links between similar objects. Unhappily, you desparately need money. You returned to your childhood home, hoping to ask the Count for help, but no one knows where he's gone. Maybe there's money or something you can sell from the estate. You begin your hunt for treasure from the kitchen garden.

Notable Features
* Puzzle filled game. As a "Textfire Classic", the game pays homage to several "old school" puzzles, including hunger puzzles, locked door puzzles, a maze, a decryption puzzle and a massive number of inventory items. Many of these puzzles have a new twist. The game's setting - a deserted family home from which one must loot treasure - is overtly old-school.
* Rich object modelling in general. Every object has a size, shape, and material comparable to the simulationist object modelling in some of Short's earlier works, notably Metamorphoses.
** Complex liquid modelling, as handled by the Inform library extension WaterElement.h. Liquids can be mixed, puddles evaporate over time, other objects sink or float in liquids, and so on.
** Complex light modelling, with respect to light source and color.
** Complex magic system allows the player to magically "link" one item to another if the two items share common properties. Once linked, actions performed on one item will have similar effects on the second. Much of the game revolves around exploration of this magic system.
* Flashback cutscenes are used to fill in some of the pre-game story.
* Many puzzles have multiple solutions. One puzzle in particular has a solution suitable for vegetarians.

How It Begins
We're treated to a short and unusual vignette, and then realize it was just a dream. Eugene Oregon wakes up on a futon in his living room. A loud crash outside arrests his attention.

It's probably no big deal.

Notable Features
* Narcolepsy is written in first person singular.
* Eugene dozes off uncontrollably at key points in the story and experiences a (random) dream.
* The screen in divided into two sections:
** the command the prompt, and the game's main text, and
** Eugene's thoughts, and the currently active conversation thread.
* You move around by going to places Eugene names in his thoughts; compass directions are rarely needed.
* The game consists of three strongly differentiated story branches named after characters in Tapestry.
* Narcolepsy is rife with in-jokes and references to other interactive fiction, such as 9:05 and I-0 (both by Adam Cadre), and Tapestry (among othersexamples needed).

Trivia
* The game contains dream sequences written by Stephen Bond, Liza Daly, Jennifer Earl, Stephen Granade, Jon Ingold, Nick Montfort, Paul O'Brian, Andrew Plotkin, Dan Shiovitz, Emily Short, Bridget Sweeney and Rob Wheeler.
* The dream sequences are all in the second person, in contrast to the main narrative in which Eugene notes: "Man, I gotta be the only guy in the world who dreams in the second person."

How It Begins
(The game asks if you would like color and instructions. Someone suggests: "Let's tell a story together.")

You are some dude regaining consciousness after a day on the slopes and too much alcohol. It's after midnight. You're in your car and carrying nothing. Your buddy Rob is driving, speeding down Montgomery Boulevard. Perhaps you want Rob to stop or slow down or find out more about those chicks you two hooked up with. But before you can do anything, you see a red light.

Now you're Wendy Mackaye, first girl on the red planet. You are at the landing site in your spacesuit. An orbiter blew up, scattering pieces of itself and stuff for a new colony all over the landscape. Your mission is to find any piece of that equipment that's still functioning.

Notable Features
* There are multiple PCs. The story is told out of order through multiple viewpoints.
* The game is highly linear; it also has many puzzleless sections and relatively easy puzzles in others, encouraging rapid advancement of the plot. It has been the focus of much discussion on linearity and difficulty within IF.
* Some of the game is a story-within-a-story.
* Each section is color-coded. The choice of colors is not arbitrary; each color fits its section in some way.
* The game uses conversation menus when talking to the NPCs.

Competition Release (color)
* Photopia (Adam Cadre as "Opal O'Donnell"; 1998; Z-code). IF Comp 1998: 1st place.
** Note 1: Opal assisted Adam by entering his game into the comp under her name and e-mail address. Adam had previously talked to Opal about borrowing a game element from her ChickenComp game (which she agreed to). By letting him use her name as a pseudonym for the competition, he was able to avoid comparisons with his earlier game I-0. See the Photopia Phaq for full details.
** Note 2: Winner of Best Writing and Best Story, XYZZY Awards 1998. Also, finalist for Best Individual NPC, Best Individual Puzzle, Best NPCs, Best Game, and Best Use of Medium.

Isxekhttps://www.ifwiki.org/index.php?title=No_Famous&diff=18277No Famous2006-09-13T19:12:25Z
Isxek: added IFID number

How It Begins
You're a young man (presumably the author himself), carrying and wearing nothing, and in bed with your girlfriend Kira, who is asleep. Beside her is a pencil and crossword puzzle magazine. You can also see some clutter and your dressers, and the bathroom is to the west. According to the alarm clock, it's just after 2 am. You should really try to sleep.

Notable Features
* Once the PC is asleep, normal game geography is meaningless. The PC may attempt to move in any direction, and will randomly arrive in one of several locations.
* Room descriptions will change on revisits. The "your bedroom" location, for example, can potentially be any bedroom the PC had in his lifetime. Likewise, the PC's age and appearance will change to match the person he was when he had that particular bedroom. In short, when the PC changes where he is, he also changes when he is.
* Objects may sometimes leave the PC's inventory without warning, only to be refound elsewhere.

Trivia and Comments
* As an entry to IF Dreams, it should be understood that this is the re-enactment of one the author's more vivid dreams.
