''The ifwiki Interactive Fiction FAQ offers succinct and current information for newcomers to IF and the IF community. It answers those questions that come up frequently and directs readers to the most important online resources. While the FAQ is meant to be a useful part of ifwiki, it also should serve well read offline or printed out.''

==What is "interactive fiction"?==

The term refers to programs (usually called "games" or, less often, "works") that let you type commands to a character. This character wanders around in a simulated world of some sort, typically one that is described in text. "Text adventure" and "text game" have been used to mean pretty much the same thing. Examples include ''[[Adventure]]'', ''[[Zork]]'', ''[[Deadline]]'', ''[[Planetfall]]'', ''[[The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy]]'', ''[[The Hobbit]]'', and ''[[Curses]]''.

Some people include [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamebook gamebooks], [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypertext hypertext fiction], and graphical adventure games such as [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myst ''Myst''] when they use the term, but those sorts of works aren't the focus of this FAQ, nor the main concern of the [[IF community]].

The ifwiki offers a formal definition of [[interactive fiction]]; there is a [http://www.plover.net/~textfire/raiffaq/FAQ.htm#whatisif longer discussion of the topic in the '''rec.arts.int-fiction''' FAQ]; and other definitions can be found in various works, such as the book [[Twisty Little Passages | ''Twisty Little Passages'']].

==What happened to [[Infocom]] ([[Magnetic Scrolls]], [[Level 9]], [[:Category:Publishers|etc.]])?==

None of the companies that produced IF during the 1980s are still around and producing IF. Infocom was acquired by Activision in 1986, for instance, and is now a (not very active) "label" of that company. Activision abandoned the Infocom trademark around 2002 (though not the copyright to the games); Pete Hottelet of Omni Consumer Products LLC [http://gameshelf.jmac.org/2010/02/that-new-official-infocom-web.html acquired the trademark] in 2007.

Interactive fiction from the Infocom era is often hard to find outside of abandonware sites and online auction sites, although some of it has been made available to the public by the company that produced it.

==How can I download and play IF?==

The Boston IF group The [[People's Republic of Interactive Fiction]] [http://pr-if.org/play/ maintains a page of IF titles playable in your browser] if you just want to get started quickly.

Many IF systems let you play in a web browser, and nearly all games are free to download. The [[IFDB | Interactive Fiction Database]] is a community-edited IF catalog of thousands of free games available to play online and download, and includes ratings, reviews, and many other features to make finding and playing games easier.

In addition to the game itself (commonly called the '[[story file]]') you usually will need to download an [[interpreter]]. Just like you need a player for music or video files, most IF games require an interpreter to run. The IFDB can help you download the correct interpreter, or you can choose one yourself; [[Gargoyle]] works well on Windows, Linux, and Mac. Other popular interpreters are [[Zoom]] for Mac and Linux and [[Spatterlight]] for Mac. You can play many games written with [[Inform]] on iOS, Android, and other mobile devices using interpreters written especially for those platforms.

One of the conveniences of Gargoyle and Spatterlight is that they can play IF created in multiple [[:Category:Authoring system | authoring systems]]. However, to see all the features of some games you may want a system-specific player; [[QTads]] is an example of a player created for a specific authoring system, [[TADS]], and [[Interpreter | many other interpreters are available for specific combinations of systems and platforms]].

Most of the games in the IFDB are hosted by the [http://ifarchive.org IF Archive], the main repository for free [[interactive fiction]]. It includes not only many games, but walkthroughs, interpreters, authoring systems, and more. The original gateway to the IF Archive is [[Baf's Guide]], and the Guide sometimes is a better search tool than the IFDB for more obscure titles.

==Where can I find out what games I might enjoy?==

In addition to the [[IFDB]], we recommend:

* Looking back through past [[XYZZY_Awards | XYZZY]] winners or games that did well in the [[IF_Comp | IF Competition]].
* Perusing the [[Reviews | IF review sites]]. Some of the best include [http://www.sparkynet.com/spag SPAG] and [http://www.brasslantern.org/reviews/text/ Brass Lantern].
* Several members of the community have extensive collections of their personal recommendations: [http://emshort.wordpress.com/how-to-play/reading-if/ Emily Short], [http://pegasus.cityofveils.com/ifrev.phtml Yoon Ha Lee], and [http://diden.net/~maga/intfiction.htm Sam Kabo Ashwell], for example.

==What can I do when I get stuck?==

If you've never played IF before, the [[People's Republic of Interactive Fiction]] created a [http://pr-if.org/doc/play-if-card/ beginner's postcard guide to IF].

Some games have in-game hints; try typing 'help', 'hint', 'hints', 'about', or 'think'. For others, hints or a walkthrough (a list of commands that will win the game, sometimes annotated) may be available on the IFDB, IF Archive or elsewhere on the Web. You can also ask fellow players for a hint on IF community sites (see below). Just be sure to include a spoiler warning and spoiler space before you reveal any details of the game, so you don't ruin the game for others by giving away some of its surprises.

==How can I post a review of a game I've finished?==

You can simply post a review to one of the community forums (see below), as many people traditionally do with IF Comp games. You can also submit your review to [http://www.sparkynet.com/spag/ SPAG], put it on the [[IFDB]], or post it on your own site or blog.

==What is this "IF Comp"?==

[[The Annual IF Competition]] is an Internet-wide competition for short games (ones you can complete in less than two hours), started in 1996 and currently run by [[Jason McIntosh]]. Anyone who is online can vote in the competition. Having played and rated five games is the only qualification necessary for judges. Recent years have seen dozens of entries and hundreds of judges: The [[IF Comp 2011|2011 Comp]] had 38 games voted on by 109 judges.

==How can I write my own game?==

Although some people develop IF from scratch in general-purpose programming languages, using one of the highly capable and free interactive fiction development systems will save you a lot of the grunt work involved in reinventing the wheel.

Popular systems include [[Inform]], [[TADS]], [[Hugo]], [[Adrift]], and [[Quest (Language) | Quest]], but [[:Category:Authoring system|there are others]]. In recent years other choice-based systems such as [[Undum]] and [[ChoiceScript]] have attracted authors as well.

==Which development system is best?==

There really isn't a way to say which IF system you should use; what you should do is take a look at all of them and see which one fits you best. One way for you to decide is to review many of them at [[Roger Firth]]'s [http://www.firthworks.com/roger/cloak/index.html Cloak of Darkness page]. Another might be to play a range of games in the IFDB and see what style of game you like the most. You should also consider the development communities for different systems, what reference information is available for each, the system's capabilities (including multimedia, if that's important to you), and whether interpreters are available on the platforms you care about.

==How do I get people to test my game?==

The site [http://if.game-testing.org/ if.game-testing.org] provides a convenient means to find testers, includes valuable information on the testing process, and allows you to sign up to test other author's games as well. You can also ask for testers on one of the community sites (see below). Often you'll have an easier time finding testers if you test a few games yourself.

==How do I get people to play my game?==

Releasing it in the [[The Annual IF Competition | IF Comp]] can be a very effective way, if it fits the bill by being a two-hour game that is not based on previous copyrighted work. There are [[:Category:Competitions | other IF competitions]] at other points in the year which are less popular but still provide good ways to release a game. If you don't release your game as part of a competition, you should announce your game on the IF community sites (see below).

You may also want to publicize your game outside the IF community, if there are other groups who might be interested in it. For example, the [[Electronic Literature Organization]], if your work is written for a literary audience, or [http://forums.tigsource.com/ TIGSource], if your IF might appeal to the general indie games community. Outside the IF community there are increasingly more competition venues and forums for games such as IF, and the ELO and TIGSource are good places to start looking.

==Where can I talk with other people who are into IF?==

The [[IF community]] started in the early 1990s on two [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet Usenet] newsgroups: "raif", for authoring, programming, craft, and theory ([http://groups-beta.google.com/group/rec.arts.int-fiction raif on Google Groups], and see the [http://www.plover.net/~textfire/raiffaq/FAQ.htm raif FAQ] and [[past raif topics]]), and "rgif", devoted to playing games ([http://groups-beta.google.com/group/rec.games.int-fiction rgif on Google Groups]). The term '''r*if''' refers to both raif and rgif.

For real-time interaction, IFers founded the [[ifmud]] in 1997 and it's still actively used today. There is an annual awards ceremony on ifMUD for the [[XYZZY Awards]], the Oscars of interactive fiction (see the [http://xyzzyawards.org/transcripts/xyzzys2009.html transcript from the 2009 XYZZY Awards here]).

IFers created [http://intfiction.org/forum Intfiction.org] in 2007, another web-based forum whose community overlaps with raif, and in 2008 [[Planet IF]], a blog aggregator that follows many IF-related blogs and RSS feeds.

2009 saw the formation of the first IF meetup group, the Boston-based [[People's Republic of Interactive Fiction]], and since then more groups have formed in [[Seattle IF Group | Seattle]], [[Chicago Interactive Fiction Group | Chicago]], and the [[SF Bay Area Interactive Fiction Group | San Francisco Bay area]]. The PR-IF hosted the first 'IF summit' at the games expo [[PAX East 2010 | PAX EAST]] in 2010.

==How can I keep up with IF news and events?==

Besides following [[Planet IF]] and [[:Category:Communities|community forums]], [http://brasslantern.org/news/ Brass Lantern], [http://ifurls.tumblr.com IF URLs], and the [[Current events | current events]] page on ifwiki are sources of news, and there is increasingly more IF discussion outside the community proper on [http://twitter.com/#search?q=%22interactive%20fiction%22 social sites such as Twitter].

[[Inform 7]] is an [[interactive fiction]] authoring system. It is notable for its use of a subset of natural language and for being rule based, rather than object based.

Although it is (in name) the successor to [[Inform]] 6, the syntax of the language is entirely different to its predecessor. The link to Inform 6 lies under the hood: an Inform story is translated first to Inform 6, which is then compiled into [[Glulx]] or [[Z-Code]] by the Inform 6 compiler. This means that works produced using Inform 7 can be played on Z-Code interpreters (although there are some modifications required, as, for example, Inform 7 games tend to use a larger stack than Inform 6).

Inform 7 was first released as a public beta on April 30th, 2006.

==Early Inform 7 games==
The earliest Inform 7 game released to the public may have been ''[[Mystery House Possessed]]'' ([[Emily Short]]; 2005) for the [[Mystery House Taken Over]] project.

On March 1st, 2006, three example games were released (see the rgif announcement: [http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.int-fiction/msg/354c7965c0dea5d6 Three Games in Inform 7]). These games were:
* ''[[Bronze]]'' (Emily Short). Example of [[pathfinding]] and room adjacency. This is an updated version of the same game from [[Speed-IF Gruff]].
* ''[[Damnatio Memoriae]]'' (Emily Short). Example of link-based [[magic]] as first seen in ''[[Savoir-Faire]]''.
* ''[[The Reliques of Tolti-Aph]]'' ([[Graham Nelson]]). Example of [[RPG]]-style [[combat]] and magic systems.

Inform 7 was released as a public beta on April 30th, 2006. Three more example games were released at the same time:
* ''[[Glass]]'' (Emily Short). Example of managing [[conversation]] flow.
* ''[[When in Rome 1: Accounting for Taste]]'' (Emily Short). Example of directable [[NPC]] and an NPC with random characteristics.
* ''[[When in Rome 2: Far from Home]]'' (Emily Short). Example of NPC with random characteristics and behaviors.

All six example games are available from the [http://inform7.com/learn/complete-examples/ Complete Examples] page.

==Code Snippets==
''I started this section before speaking to Graham Nelson about how we might share code examples. He said he had thought about the idea, but wanted to ponder it some more. If and when he decides to do something, I will likely alter this section. In the meantime, examples are welcome. --[[User:David Cornelson|David Cornelson]] 21:27, 13 May 2006 (EST)''

* ''[[Scenery Tables]]'' - defining scenery using tables by [[David Cornelson]].

Hi David, thanks for your edits. The howto:tads kind of syntax was because I was confused about how categories work, thanks for fixing it.

On tutorial vs howto, I was assuming tutorial meant longer, more comprehensive articles that tried to cover a language as a whole; while howto would be more like individual faq answers on common tasks. But if you think that the smaller topics fit well in tutorial, I won't argue. :-)
When I start putting things in, I'll use the naming conventions you have suggested.
== Inform 7 code examples ==

I was looking at [[:Category:Examples of code]] and noticed that there is only one full [[Inform 7]] example, which you wrote, at [[Smell restrictions (Inform 7 example)]].

First, there is a minor issue that prevents that example from compiling as written:
if noun is yourself or the spacesuit
is not valid.
Presumably at one point I7 did allow that.

Second, I wasn't happy with the way the example mixes before and instead rules so I made some changes and plopped it at [http://www.sentex.ca/~dchapes/smell_example.txt smell_example.txt].
I didn't edit the example directly because I didn't want to step on any toes.

My changes use a few more lines of setup but the payoff is that it's much easier to add new smells which behave much the same way as descriptions do.
Also the smelling action then behaves and can be changed and have rules added like the other actions instead of having to use before rules.

I believe it's a better showcase of how achieve the desired effect in Inform 7 and I'd like to make the changes to the wiki if you have no objections
(with the appropriate
<nowiki>
&nbsp;</nowiki>
formatting of course).

Speaking of formatting...
I assume for Inform 7 code you chose not to use <nowiki>
</nowiki> tags since Inform 7 source is more like a narative and you want paragraph wrapping and what-not.
The problem with that is the need for explicit <nowiki>
</nowiki> formatting occasionally which makes pasting in a working example marginally non-trivial.
If continuing this way is what is desired how about adding a little bit of CSS to syntax highlight comments and strings as well?

Finally, if no one objects I may try my hand at providing the (currently) three missing Inform 7 examples. Thanks, --[[User:Peskie|Peskie]] 16:35, 1 June 2009 (PDT)
Captcha's here seem completely broken. I attempted to update the links on the [[IFM]] page and was
I then searched the ifwiki for "captcha" and tried adding a note to [[talk:Main Page]] and even if I tried adding a new section there I was incorrectly told I had added new links and asked to enter a non-existent captcha. :( —[[User:Peskie|Peskie]] 23:19, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
::It did. Thank you! (And apologies David for using your talk page, but it was one of the few places I tried where it let me do an edit). —[[User:Peskie|Peskie]] 02:06, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
Peskiehttps://www.ifwiki.org/index.php?title=IFM&diff=71369IFM2014-11-08T02:02:55Z
Peskie: Update links

'''IFM''' is a language and a program written by [[Glenn Hutchings]] for keeping track of your progress through an Interactive Fiction game. You can record each room you visit and its relation to other rooms, the initial locations of useful items you find, and the tasks you need to perform in order to solve the game.

The IFM mapping commands are designed so that you can easily add to the map as you explore the game. You type in the rooms you visit and the directions you move in to reach other rooms, and IFM calculates the position of each room relative to the others. A map can consist of several independent sections, allowing you to divide up the map however you like.

The IFM task commands, if used, allow you to specify the order in which game-solving tasks must be done. The IFM program can then calculate and print different styles of walkthrough for the game.

IFM can write hardcopy maps directly to PostScript, suitable for printing or viewing. It can also write maps in Fig format, which can be viewed and edited using Xfig, or converted into many other formats.

There are a couple of utility programs bundled with IFM including '''tkifm''' and '''scr2ifm'''.

=Tkifm=
'''tkifm''' is a simple graphical interface to IFM. To use it, you need to have Tcl/Tk installed (probably v8.0 or greater).

tkifm provides you with a window allowing you to edit IFM input (or just view it, if you want to use your own editor), and menus to view the maps you've generated so far or print them to a PostScript file.

=Scr2ifm=
'''scr2ifm''' is a program that takes one or more Infocom-style transcripts of an IF game and creates a map in IFM format. It's a perl script, so you'll need perl (version 5.002 or greater).

scr2ifm is designed for people who want maps of their games but don't want the hassle of making one themselves (how lazy can you get?). As long as you bear in mind a few simple things while playing, the map-making process is completely automatic. With a tiny amount of effort, you can also add other nice IFM features (items and tasks) too.

scr2ifm was inspired by [[Frobot]], another transcript-reading mapper. But scr2ifm in combination with IFM does a much better job.

'''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trope Tropes]''' are familiar devices, styles, and conventions in literature, movies, and even IF. The audience gets used to and expects some of these recurring patterns, and the use of tropes can make an author's task easier. However, if a trope is used too often, it becomes a [[IF Cliches|cliché]].
Hi. I'm credited on this page as writing a review for Alabaster. It's flattering, but I'm not sure a 250 word, pretty uninformed recommendation really counts as a "review".

Thanks,

I've been tracking responses to the game so that I can point collaborators at the page if they're curious about our feedback, and reviews in the IF community are often of variable length (plenty of reviews on IFDB are shorter than this), so it seemed a valid thing to include. Anyway, I'm sorry if that was out of line. I've pulled the link.
''Gargoyle'' is intended to care about typography, that is, to render the IF in a way most comfortable for reading. Features include specially chosen fonts, kerning, ligatures, text justification and many others. The options can be finetuned in the simple text file 'garglk.ini'; for example, using Notepad on MS Windows, the text justification can be turned on by changing the line containing:
justify 0 # 0=ragged-right 1=justified
to
justify 1 # 0=ragged-right 1=justified
"Smell example" by IFWiki

[Inform has a built-in smelling action but all it does is say "You smell nothing unexpected." Let's turn it into a 'proper' action. Normally an action doesn't say anything in the carry out rules, leaving that to the report rules. However, smelling is arguably like examining in that the act of smelling *is* getting the report so we'll copy what examining does. We'll also follow the examine model in that examining something shows its "description" property; we'll make smelling something show its "odour property".]

[First we'll create the property for all things and rooms.]

A thing has a text called odour.

A room has a text called odour.

[We need to remove the default blocking rule.]

The block smelling rule is not listed in the check smelling rulebook.

[Now we'll add a default carry out rule.]

The last carry out smelling rule:

 say "[if the odour of the noun is not empty][the odour of the noun][paragraph break][otherwise]You smell nothing unexpected.[end if]".

[For completeness we'll add a rule for NPCs smelling things.]

Report someone smelling:

 say "[The person asked] smells [the noun]."

Street is a room. "You are in a street. The sewer is below you." The odour is "You pick up a faint odour from below."

A flower is here. The description is "It's just a nice flower. You don't know what type." The odour is "It smells wonderful."

A spacesuit is here. It is wearable. Understand "space suit" and "suit" as the spacesuit. The description is "Spacesuits are wonderful things, but they make EVERYONE look fat."

Sewer is below Street. "You are in a sewer. The street is above you."

Some sewage is here. It is fixed in place. The description is "Horrible smelly sewage is everywhere in the sewer." The odour is "It reeks."

[Finally we'll add some rules to restrict smelling.]

Instead of smelling when the spacesuit is worn and the noun is not yourself and the noun is not the spacesuit:

 say "You can't smell anything while wearing the spacesuit."

Instead of smelling in the presence of the sewage when the spacesuit is not worn and the noun is not the sewage:

 say "The disgusting reek of the sewage overwhelms your nose. You can't smell anything else."

[If we wanted to write the second rule to be independent of the previous (by omitting the 'spacesuit is not worn' part) we'd just need to adjust the ordering to make sure its rule comes after the one above. Unless we say otherwise Inform will reorder the rules putting the sewage rule before the suit rule, thinking it's more specific (see 18.18 for the gory details). To override this we'd either use "last" (or first) or name the rules and use "The sewage smelling rule is listed before the spacesuit smelling rule in the instead rulebook."]

Test me with "smell / take flower / smell it / take suit / smell it / d / smell / smell sewage / smell flower / wear suit / smell / smell sewage / smell flower / smell suit / smell me".
However, smelling is arguablly like examining in that the act of smelling *is* getting the report so we'll copy what examining does.

[If we wanted to write the second rule to be independant of the previous (by omitting the 'spacesuit is not worn' part) we'd just need to adjust the ordering to make sure its rule comes after the one above. Unless we say otherwise Inform will reorder the rules putting the sewage rule before the suit rule, thinking it's more specific (see 18.18 for the gorry details).

AScape is a basic [[interpreter]] for [[Adventurescape]] games.

It was written to be compiled under djgpp on Windows 32; but there should be no reason why the code cannot be ported across to any systems that has gcc.

It is still pretty basic, but supports nearly all of the standard Adventurescape games.

Proposed layout for a game entry.

==Page name==
''Main article: [[IFWiki:Title]].''

Whenever possible, use the game's title for the name of the page about it.
* If the game's title is identical to another game's title, and both are equally well-known (or equally unknown), append "(by ''author's-surname'')" to the page name. For example: ''[[Three Doors (by Løvborg)]]'' and ''[[Three Doors (by Berman)]]''. Also use this approach for the lesser of two games when one game of the pair is well-known and the other is not, e.g.: ''[[The Hobbit (by Makarov)]]''. The well-known game, ''[[The Hobbit]]'', should not have to use a "(by surname)" phrase.
* If the game's title is identical to another page (but the second page isn't about another game), then you can simply append "(game)" to the page name about the game. For example: ''[[Darkness (game)]]''.
* If the game doesn't have a title, name the page "untitled (''story-file-name'')". For example, [[untitled (onion2.gam)]].

==Row of Icons==
Not a named section, but a row of icons that lets a reader see at a glance which genres the game belongs in, which competitions it was entered in, and which awards that the game has earned.

The entire row of icons probably needs to be enclosed in a html construct that'll reserve an entire horizontal slice of the page for the icons. This is a bit icky that we seem to need to do this, but you'd be surprised how easily page elements will fall into stupid arrangements if you're not careful. Try something like this:

<table style="width:100%;margin-bottom:1em;clear:both"><tr><td> '''icon templates go here''' </td></tr></table>

* NOTE: ''Reports are coming in that the games pages looked horrible in Firefox, Mozilla, etc. Anything that isn't IE. One suggestion was to add clear:both to the div box. I hope (cross-fingers) that it stops the horror of overlapping boxes everywhere. -- [[User:Dswxyz|David Welbourn]] 16:58, 13 February 2006 (EST)''
* NOTE 2: ''Grr. Divs just aren't working, for some reason. There's still overlap with them. Go with table tags. -- [[User:Dswxyz|David Welbourn]] 17:48, 13 February 2006 (EST)''

===Genre Icons===
''Main page: [[IFWiki:Genre]]''.

Each genre icon must be exactly 50 by 50 pixels in size so they'll group together nicely. (Or at least that's the theory; if the font size of the text underneath is too wide, they'll space out unevenly anyway.) Each icon must also have a text equivalent underneath.

Each icon is specified by a template, usually with the same name as the text we want displayed underneath. For example, to insert the Ship icon, you'd use {{ship}}. Two exceptions: the Porn/Erotica icon is {{porn}}, and the Science-Fiction icon is {{sci-fi}}.

These are the genre icons we have so far; we may add more later.
===Competition/Award Icons===

''Main page: [[IFWiki:Competition icons]]''

{{ifcnth|1998|16th of 27}} Partipication in competitions and awards are represented by various icons. The icons go in a box and are labelled within the box with the competition name and some comment of how the game placed at the comp or which prize it was awarded. These boxes go right after the genre icons in the row of icons.

There are various templates to make adding these finnicky boxes easier; see the [[IFWiki:Competition icons]] page for more details.

==Opening paragraph==
The opening paragraph, if any, should be short and sweet. It goes second on the page. If everything else goes where it's supposed to, the opening paragraph will appear under the row of icons, and above both the table of contents and the infobox.

==Game infobox==
There should be a table of standardized data about the game that floats on the right-hand side of the page. This is done with the template [[:Template:Game infobox|Game infobox]]. It should be specified after the row of icons and all opening paragraphs so that the top edge of the infobox will line up with the top edge of the table of contents to its left.

Currently, there's only this one form of the infobox, and it isn't flexible. (I haven't yet figured out ''how'' to make it flexible -- [[User:Dswxyz|David Welbourn]].) Every parameter of the infobox must be specified; you cannot nicely leave out parameters or assume that default values will go in. Sorry about that, but I just don't know how to get that to work.

Anyway, here are the parameters you need to fill out and what they mean:
* '''title'''. This is the title of the game. If the game is known by more than one title, separate them with <br> tags and preface the 2nd through nth names with "a.k.a."
** On rethought, putting multiple titles in this location doesn't look too good, especially if one wants to comment about the translated name of a non-English title. Ideally, we just want the first or best known name of the game here. Commentary about a game title, if brief, can be put in the opening paragraph. If there's a lot to say about the game's title, then put the commentary in the Trivia and Comments section. Thanks.
* '''image'''. This is reserved for games that have an associated image. Maybe it's a photo of the box cover that the game came in. Maybe it's a title screen graphic. Maybe it's a logo from the game's homepage. See the [[Cover art (style guide)|cover art style guide]] for how to upload and link to images. For most games, however, just leave the image parameter empty, eg: image=
* '''author'''. Name all the authors, separating with commas and "and" as appropriate. Don't use ampersands (&). Enclose names with double square brackets so they'll become links to the authors' pages.
* '''publisher'''. Name the publishers. If there's no publisher, just use n/a as the publisher.
* '''released'''. The release date. I prefer the dd-Mmm-yyyy format for the date.
* '''authsystem'''. The [[authoring system]] used to write the game. If you don't know what it is, use TBD or unknown.
* '''platform'''. The list of [[platform]]s that the game can be run on.
* '''language'''. The human languages used in the game, eg: English, Italian, Spanish, etc.
* '''license'''. The [[license]](s) that the game was released under. Most amateur games are simply Freeware, but others might be Commercial, Former commercial, some form of the Creative Commons license, and so on.
* '''color'''. Does the game change the text color or background color behind the text?
** none if the game uses default text colors, or sets the colors to non-default colors at the start of the game, but doesn't change them thereafter.
** optional if the game does change the colors in midgame but only for cosmetic reasons. A player unable to see the color change (eg: blind player or player using a black-and-white only 'terp) can still play and finish the game.
** required if the game does change the colors in midgame and the player must be able to see them in order to play and finish the game. Blind players would be unable to play a game with required color.
* '''graphics'''. Does the game use graphics at all? Answers could include none, optional, or required. In the latter two cases, more info is wanted: what types or graphics and how are they used? (We'll probably want to standardize this.)
** none if the game does not include graphics.
** optional if the game does include graphics, but a player unable to see the graphics (eg: blind player or player using a text-only interpreter) can reasonably play and finish the game without missing anything essential.
** required if the game does include graphics, and the player must be able to see the graphics in order to play and finish the game. Blind players would be unable to play a game with required graphics.
* '''sound'''. Does the game use sound or music at all?
** none if the game does not use sound or music.
** optional if the game does use sound or music, but a player unable to hear the sound (eg: deaf player or player using a computer without working speakers) can reasonably play and finish the game without missing anything essential.
** required if the game does use sound or music, and the player must be able to hear it in order to play and finish the game. Deaf people would be unable to play a game with required sounds.
* '''cruelty'''. Where does the game rank on [[Andrew Plotkin]]'s [[cruelty scale]]? If you don't know, use TBD. The Game info template will automagically turn the value into an appropriate link.

And here's an example of it all put together:

{{game infobox|title=Galatea|image=|author=[[Emily Short]]|publisher=n/a|released=2000|authsystem=[[Inform]]|platform=[[Z-code]]|language=English|license=[[Freeware]]|color=none|graphics=none|sound=none|cruelty=Merciful}}

In the future, we may have other infoboxes defined that specifies include different info or leaves some of the above info out; we'll let you know how that works when we figure it out.

==How It Begins==
In this section, we want to give a taste of the game by telling how it begins. One must not give spoilers or give away any obvious secrets of the game. Do not insert a screenshot or a text dump directly copied from the game's scrollback. Restrict your description to the following:
* If the player is warned upfront about sexual content, violence, vulgarity, adult situations, interpreter requirements or display options, write a short paragraph that summarizes these warnings.
* If the player is asked to fill out a questionnaire right at the beginning—for example, to choose the PC's name or gender—then write a short paragraph that summarizes the nature of the questionnaire.
* The main paragraph should begin by stating who the initial PC is, or thinks he or she is. Include the PC's name if the player or PC knows it. Do not spoil games where the PC's identity is a puzzle or difficult to determine.
* Continue the main paragaph stating where the PC thinks he or she is, who is nearby, and what the PC is carrying and wearing.
* Conclude the main paragraph with what immediate goals that the PC is presented with, if any. If the PC has no obvious goal at first, but one presents itself within ten turns of play, then that goal may be stated.
* Another very short paragraph may be added to describe the scope and general impressions of the rest of the game: will you be exploring worlds, a city, or just one building? Is the game silly or serious? Puzzle-filled or story-driven? Try to be very terse and objective.
* If the game contains sexual content, violence, vulgarity, adult situations, or other potentially disagreeable elements, provide a terse warning where the paragraph begins with "'''WARNING:'''". Do this regardless if you've already said that the game warns you about any of it.

==Notable Features==
This optional section may be used to list ways in which this game does things differently from the normal IF game. Think about all the features of the game, including the game mechanics and game display.
* Does the game do something innovative or clever?
* Have IF standards or conventions been changed?
* Does the game use any standard [[:Category:Tropes|tropes]]?
* Are there extra features of note?
* Are there in-jokes that ought to be explained?
* Is this game the first to do something? The only game to do something?

'''*** NOTE: Standard features are NOT notable ***'''

In particular, it is not notable that a game is written in Inform or Adrift. It is not notable that that game can be run on the Commodore-32. It is not notable that a game was in a competition. It is not notable that a game won an award.

Why not? Because we noted these things elsewhere on the page. This section is for ''other'' stuff you probably want to say about the game. The things done well. The things done badly. The things done strangely. This is not the place for same-old same-old statistics. Tell us something new.

==Trivia and Comments==
Optional section for miscellaneous stuff we want to say about the game that doesn't easily fit into any of the other sections. In a bulleted list, please.

==Author's Comments==
Completely optional; this section should only be completed by (or at the request of) the game's author(s).

I'm not really sure what an author might want to put here, but I'm sure authors will think of something. Maybe thank testers or have a story about the crafting of the game. Maybe talk about plans for a sequel or upgrade or port. That's cool.

What I don't want here are game spoilers, exhibitions of bad sportsmanship, or extravagent ads with huge graphics. Please and thank you.

==Versions==
For every distinct version, craft a little section like this:

'''Version Name'''
* ''Game Title'' (authors/porters/etc; release date; platform; language if not English).
** Notes: Optional line to help clarify the difference between this version and any other.
** Release 1 / Serial number 060718 / Inform 7 build 3T38 (I6/v6.31 lib 6/10N)
** <nowiki>{{babel|ifid=XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX}}</nowiki>
** Competition: Where it placed (out of X games), and which awards it received.
** Files: List of filenames (filesize; optional short description; download links).

The version name should be the most natural way to refer to the given version. Examples of version names: "Version 1", "Release 1.2", "Original version", "Competition version", "Spanish translation", "Hugo port".

Please use the "version" command to determine the release line from Inform games.

Determine the IFID by using the [[Babel (utility)|babel utility]] and use the appropriate [[:Template:babel|babel]] template. Each version of a game might have a different IFID; include the babel template for each one. If in a rush, or if the IFID can't be easily determined, please use the <nowiki>{{babel wanted}}</nowiki> template instead so future editors know that the IFID still needs to be determined for this game.

The list of files may itself be a bulleted list, if that makes things clearer. Most files would have the short description "story file", which may be omitted. Other files should be marked as optional or required as appropriate, e.g.: "optional feelie map".

This section should be a bulleted list of off-line references to the game. We're talking about books and printed magazine articles; not everything is on the web, after all. We're more likely to need this section for older games, particularly from the commercial era of IF in the 1980s.

(More details about this section to come as we hammer them out.)

==Links==
At first, we probably aren't going to be too fussy about how game-related links are arranged in this section, since it's more important to document the URLs first, and make it look pretty second.

However, that said, we do have some preferences for this section.

First of all, all '''download''' links and '''play it online''' links should NOT be in the Links section, but in the Versions section instead. People will want to know if they're downloading version 1 or 3; that's best done by putting those links with the rest of the version info.

Second, we'll want to group links into related subcategories when we get a big handful of them. The subcategories are General Info, Reviews, and Spoilers.

===General Info===
Note: We won't need to label this subsection explicitly.
* Homepage of the game. This link, if available, should go first.
* Author's Notes page, if any, and if different from the homepage.
* [[Baf's Guide]] listing of the game. Use a [[Template:baf game|baf game]] template to insert the link, e.g.:
** <nowiki>{{baf game|Adventure|1}}</nowiki>
*: turns into
** {{baf game|Adventure|1}}

* [[IFDB]] listing of the game. Use an [[Template:ifdb game|ifdb game]] template to insert the link, e.g.:
** <nowiki>{{ifdb game|Jigsaw|28uhmejlntcbccqm}}</nowiki>
*: turns into
** {{ifdb game|Jigsaw|28uhmejlntcbccqm}}
: If you don't know the game's [[TUID]], you may use <nowiki>{{TUID wanted}}</nowiki> instead.

* [[Home of the Underdogs]] listing of the game. Use a [[Template:hotu game|hotu game]] template to insert the link, e.g.:
** <nowiki>{{hotu game|Galatea|2262}}</nowiki>
*: turns into
** {{hotu game|Galatea|2262}}

* Wikipedia listing of the game
* other similar links

===Reviews===
* IF Ratings listing of the game. Suggestion: use the ifratings game template to insert the link to a game,
eg: {{ifratings game|Adventure|1}} will turn into:
** {{ifratings game|Adventure|1}}
* Links to other reviews about this game. Don't include the Baf's Guide url again.
* Links to r*if threads about this game.
* Optional shoutout. At the top of the reviews list, it is permissible to use the [[:Template:Shoutout|shoutout]] template to quote a single sentence from one of the reviews listed. The shoutout should also name the quote's author. Shoutouts should be used sparingly, not include spoilers, and help whet the reader's appetite to read one of the listed reviews.

===Spoilers===
* The spoiler page for this game, if any.
* Links to hints, solutions, and walkthroughs.

==Series Box==
Most games aren't part of a series or set. However, if a game does belong to a series, an appropriate series box template should be inserted after the Links section. A series box should be a table centered horizontally on the page, contain the name of the series, contain a link to each game in the series, and, y'know, look nice. Here's an example of a series box, specified via <nowiki>{{Earth and Sky series}}</nowiki>:
{{Earth and Sky series}}

Such templates should also belong to the [[:Category:Game series templates|Game series templates]] category; see that category for more examples.

==Game Stub==
When the page for a game is seriously incomplete, please add an instance of the [[Template:game stub|game stub]] template at the bottom of the page, e.g.:

:<nowiki>{{game stub|Genres, How It Begins, Notable Features, full version info}}</nowiki>

Use of the game stub template will automatically add the page to the [[:Category:Game stubs|Game stubs]] category.

==Categories==
===Which categories should a game page be added to?===
* First, all games should be listed in ''[[:Category:Games|Games]]''.
* '''NO''' ''Games by author or publisher'': In general, there is no need to create category pages like "Douglas Adams games" or "Level 9 games" since those games should already be listed on the author's or publisher's page as appropriate.
** However, there is ''[[:Category:Co-written games|Co-written games]]'' for games by two or more authors.
* ''[[:Category:Games by year|Games by year]]'': Add games to the appropriate "Games in ''year''" category, where ''year'' is the year when the game was originally released. For example: [[:Category:Games in 2006|Games in 2006]].
* ''[[:Category:Games by authoring system|Games by authoring system]]'': Add games to the appropriate "''Authoring system'' games" category(ies), where ''authoring system'' is an IF authoring system. For example: [[:Category:ADRIFT 4 games|ADRIFT 4 games]]. We will distinguish between [[:Category:Inform 6 games|Inform 6 games]] and [[:Category:Inform 7 games|Inform 7 games]].
* ''[[:Category:Games by platform|Games by platform]]'': Add games to appropriate "''Platform'' games" category(ies), where ''platform'' is a major IF platform. For example: [[:Category:Z-code games|Z-code games]]. When the authoring system and the platform are the same, eg: [[:Category:TADS 2 games|TADS 2 games]], then you only have to add it the once; there will be overlap.
* ''Games by language'': Add games to appropriate "''Language'' games" category(ies) where ''language'' is any human language except English. For example: [[:Category:Italian games|Italian games]].
** Also, if a game was translated from one language to another, add the game to [[:Category:Translated games|Translated games]].
* ''Games by competition'': This refers to games from recurring competitions, eg: [[:Category:IF Comp games|IF Comp games]], [[:Category:IF Art Show games|IF Art Show games]], [[:Category:Speed-IF games|Speed-IF games]], etc. There may also be award categories, eg: [[:Category:XYZZY Award winning games|XYZZY Award winning games]] as appropriate. Do not make categories for one-time competitions; that just duplicates info from an existing page.
** ''This rule used to be more restrictive to just a couple comps, but it made no sense to be that restrictive when we're being so much more lenient with authoring system and platform categories.''
* ''[[:Category:Games by genre|Games by genre]]'': If you've used the genre icons at the top, the page will be added to the appropriate genre categories automatically. However, if the game begins with an article, you'll have to add them to the appropriate genre categories manually, eg: [[:Category:Drama|Drama]] or [[:Category:One-room|One-room]].

===Any other guidelines about game categories?===
* It's best to list the categories at the bottom of the page. It makes it easier for the next editor to find them.
* It was prefered that the basic [[:Category:Games|Games]] category was listed first, then all the others in alphabetical order. However, alphabetical order is now impossible to specify, since some templates (game stub, genre and cruelty) now automatically add the page to their associated categories in the order that the templates appear on the page.
* If the game's title begins with an article like "A", "An", "The", "La", "Le", "Les", etc., specify the name without the article in the category tag so the page will sort correctly. For example, we want "The Moonlit Tower" to sort under M, not T. So you'd have to specify "Category:Games|Moonlit Tower" within the double square brackets. In this case, you will need to specify the appropriate genre and cruelty categories manually to override the default handling.

==Uploading Cover Art==
To upload [[cover art]] to [[IFWiki]] use the ''Upload file'' link in the toolbox on the left pane.

Most reasonable image formats are accepted including JPEG, PNG, and GIF.
You can upload the full resolution cover art, no need to pre-scale the image (see below).

Do make sure that IFWiki has permission to use the image, however.
Often for cover art on page about the game this is implicitly allowed but verifying permission is good.

Although the '''Destination filename:''' field can be almost anything you want,
it's easier if it matches the title of the game (possibly without the leading article).
For example, for a game called ''The Best Game Ever'',
using
Best Game Ever.jpg

or
Best Game Ever small cover.jpg

would be reasonable.
Note that the file name cannot be edited after uploading.

Full wiki markup can be entered in the '''Summary:''' field,
although there is no preview feature available on the upload page.
You can always edit the summary after uploading using the normal wiki page editor with preview functions.

The summary should include the image creator and licensing information as well as a link to a cover art category.
The recommend content is something like:

<nowiki>Cover art for ''[[Game Title]]'' ([[Author]]; Date; [[Platform]]).
<any image copyright notices or attributions here>

[[Category:Cover art/X]]
</nowiki>

where '''X''' is the first letter of the game's title.
If the file name does not match the title (or starts with A/An/The) you should include the title to sort by in the category line so that the image page is sorted correctly within the category.
For example:
<nowiki>[[Category:Cover art/E|Image:Edifice, The]]</nowiki>
(note the leading Image: text).

==Linking to Cover Art==

Within the game's infobox use one of the following:

* <nowiki>[[Image:filename.jpg|cover art|thumb|center]]</nowiki>
* <nowiki>[[Image:filename.jpg|cover art|200px]]</nowiki>
* <nowiki>[[Image:filename.jpg|cover art]]</nowiki>

depending on the image size.
Using thumb uses the user's preferences to determine the size whereas using ###px sets the images maximum width directly.
''<nowiki>[Which is prefered??]</nowiki>''
If the uploaded image is already small it may be best to not specify a size at all.

For example:
<nowiki>{{game infobox|<...>|image=[[Image:Foo.jpg|cover art|thumb|center]]|<...>}}</nowiki>

MediaWiki will automatically scale down
(or up, but don't do that for cover art)
the image as specified.
There is currently no IFWiki standard size for cover art;
use something that looks good in the preview or use thumb.
Note that the scaling is done 'correctly';
that is a new file of the correct size is automatically generated on the Wiki and
referenced in an <img> HTML tag
rather than referencing the full-size image and using <img> tag attributes to scale the image in the client.

Currently most games at Shadow Vault are in this same directory,
the exception appears to be for David Whyld's games (the owner of Shadow Vault) which are in the root directory (some of the game pages that link to David's games use different text such as "Download spotofbother.taf from the author's website, Shadow Vault" so perhaps a separate template for those is warranted anyway).

Oh-HO. Good work, sir. Does this mean that general game-page construction is now advisable, or should we hold off a bit longer until the template stabilises?
To me, the formatting on [[Galatea]] looks pretty hideous - the first paragraph after the award icons starts to the left of the icons, above the infobox, and spills over on top of the infobox. I can take a screenshot if that'd help. - [[User:Maga|Maga]] 00:13, 13 February 2006 (EST)
:The game page as a whole is not quite as stabile as I'd like. I may have bitten off more than I can chew with this design. There are several things I'd like to do with this particular part of it that I haven't figured out: a) how to give items a default value, b) how to make a row disappear if the associated value isn't specified, c) how to insert one template as a parameter value for an outer template, d) if I put class="infobox" in the table definition, how do I tell the wiki that all td tags should get the style vertical-align:top? Otherwise, this template seems okay for now. We may want to fiddle with the colors a bit; all that blue is a bit in-one's-face. Maybe a softer blue-grey? -- [[User:Dswxyz|David Welbourn]] 12:01, 13 February 2006 (EST)
::Default values were implented in MediaWiki 1.6. There's also an [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/ParserFunctions extension] (for 1.6, I presume), which allows for conditional rows in tables. According to [[Special:Version]], we're on 1.5.6. Would the system administrator consider upgrading? (This isn't a very critical issue, just saying.) --[[User:Mara|Mara]] 02:56, 9 September 2006 (EST)
::I note IFWiki is still using 1.5.6. I'd really like to see this updated. There have been a few cases where I wanted to make a new template (or modify an existing one) and the lack of conditionals stopped me. Thanks. --[[User:Peskie|Peskie]] 06:11, 15 June 2009 (PDT)

==Cruelty==
I've just commited a change made vis-à-vis the cruelty scale; basically you pass on the name of a template, i.e. cruelty=[template]. This creates a link to, say, [[:Category:Merciful games]] and adds that category to the page; cf. [[Template:Merciful]]. Is this overall a good idea? --[[User:Mara|Mara]] 07:38, 9 September 2006 (EST)
:The general principle is fine. However, I would change [[:Template:TBD]] to [[:Template:Cruelty TBD]]; the former is potentially ambiguous without context. We might in the future want other to-be-determined-type templates. -- [[User:Dswxyz|David Welbourn]] 10:26, 9 September 2006 (EST)

Unfortunately, it apparently doesn't quite work with game pages (with game infobox template) which were created '''before''' the template was updated. See [[Filaments]] or [[La Mort Pour Seul Destin]], for instance (or any other game of the [[:Category:French games|French games]] category, except Adventure) : when you look at the game page, the [[:Category:Cruelty to be determined]] or [[:Category:Cruel games]] is there at the bottom, BUT when you look in the category itself (see [[:Category:Cruelty to be determined]], for instance), the game isn't listed ! I wonder why.
--[[User:Eriorg|Eriorg]] 09:09, 19 September 2006 (EST)
:The template is fine; this is a side-effect of how the wiki software works (or doesn't work). Changing the template didn't tell the wiki to go re-evaluate every page with the template as far as updating categories go, and visiting a game page with the template won't do that either. The older game pages will need to be re-edited, no matter how slightly, before the wiki software will re-evaluate everything fully. Coincidentally, I think that the game stub templates should be moved to the bottom of game pages (to look a little nicer), and that should take care of most of the older pages. -- [[User:Dswxyz|David Welbourn]] 21:31, 19 September 2006 (EST)
Peskiehttps://www.ifwiki.org/index.php?title=File_talk:Adventures_of_the_President_of_the_United_Staes.gif&diff=38821File talk:Adventures of the President of the United Staes.gif2009-06-14T08:47:07Z
Peskie: Note filename typo

==Incorrect name==
I made a typo when uploading this, obviously it should be '''States''' and not '''Staes'''.
There is no move tab/option for files however (at least for non-admins).
Given that it's a small error that won't effect sorting,
I just left it as-is rather than upload a replacement file.

It'd be cool if an admin could rename this file to the correct name and fix the one link to this.

Thanks (and sorry for the typo, I'll take more care with file uploads in the future).

==How It Begins==
First, there is a title card page, where the author explains that the player is given one instant to interfere in the life of the male protagonist, and that this action will both begin and end the story. There is also a warning that there are many stories and they are not all about the same man.

The set-up: You are a man shopping in the pasta aisle that runs north-south in a supermarket. Shelves are on either side. You particularly note the fresh Gnocchi which you haven't had since Rome. You can also see the aisle markers, your trolley, bags of pasta, and a brunette woman filling her trolley with sauces.

==Notable Features==
* The original "one move" game. After the results of the player's command are displayed, the game pauses for a keypress, then returns the game back to the beginning so the player can make another choice.
* Multiple endings. Although some endings are better than others, there is no best [[winning]] ending; the player is not playing to win or lose. Also, the endings, taken together, imply inconsistent past histories for the PC.
* [[Puzzleless]]. The player is expected to explore the possibilities offered by the set-up. There is some emphasis on calling each variant a ''story'', or part of a story.

==Trivia and Comments==
* Directly inspired the following two games:
** ''[[I'll]]'' ([[Sean Barrett]]; 2000; Z-code).
** ''[[Pick Up the Phone Booth and Aisle]]'' (several authors; 09-Jun-2001; Z-code).
==How It Begins==
Some people are happy working in an office, some become taxi cab drivers and some people will even teach. You are none of those; you are a 'lone-wolf gunmen who likes to maintain a low profile' or professional killer.

You have always prided yourself on an ability to get the job done and to give value for money. In fact you have a very good reputation of getting the job done, no matter how complicated or difficult. Years of military training and discipline have honed the skills needed to execute a hit efficiently and dispassionately. So when the next piece of work comes in you quickly accept, especially when you have seen the fee.

==Notable Features==
* Each time Target is played certain key facts change.
* The INTRO, DETAILS, and CREDITS commands will display the appropriate information available from the opening game menu.
* HINT will let you access some in-game hints.
* The game includes a built-in walkthru, which changes each time the game is played.
