Status bar

The status bar (or status line) is a line of text, typically at the top of the interpreter's screen, that traditionally provides information such as the current location in the game world, score, or time of day. Custom status bars may present a compass rose, diagnose the PC's health, or do anything else the designer feels is helpful.

The readers of a novel might check the number of pages remaining in order to assess the significance of a particular event; players of an interactive fiction game may use the status bar in a similar way.
