How It Begins
"So is the new book ready yet, Paul?"
You cast around for some good excuse, but come up with nothing convincing.
"Look, Paul," Tom sighs. "You're a great author. Your last two books have been best sellers, and so the company has been forgiving so far. But you're nearly two years over-schedule. If you don't have another book out soon, the public will have forgotten who you are. You'll have to start from the bottom again, and I don't think either of us want that."
You shake your head wearily. "I'm well over halfway through," you say. "But the plot... I don't know, I can't figure out all the twists. I mean, I know what I want to happen, but I can't come up with a convincing way to get the characters there."
"And I suppose your home situation hasn't been much help."
Tom is a great agent, and has become a good friend over the past few years. Of course, he knows all about your messy separation.
"It does make it difficult to write when your ex is throwing stuff at your head," you nod in agreement.
"Listen, Paul, I have an offer for you. Due to the success of your last two books, I have been able to afford that summer house that I always wanted. Why don't you go there for a couple of weeks? It's quiet and secluded and you can really get down to some serious writing without all the distractions of home. What do you say?"
You pause for a moment to consider.
"I wasn't really asking you know," Tom laughs. "It was more of an order! Get your ass out there for two weeks and come back with at least a finished first draft, ok?"
You grin. "Deal."
