Any chance we could discuss the scope of the recent changes you're making? I don't think you quite realize what side-effects you're generating. -- David Welbourn 11:55, 7 September 2006 (EST)

Sure, what side-effects? --Mara 12:03, 7 September 2006 (EST)
Well, adding the genre templates to their respective categories means that now Category:Drama is a subcategory of itself, for example. Also, a page like IFWiki:Genre will end up in all genre categories. Third, this change won't remove the responsibility to add the genre categories manually in some cases anyway, because sometimes we need to sort games without leading "The", for example. -- David Welbourn 12:09, 7 September 2006 (EST)
I'm aware that these categories list their titular templates among the list of games (as intended), though I don't see this as much of a problem. MediaWiki does include conditionals which may be used to exclude the categories from, say, IFWiki:Genre, and from category listings themselves, though I haven't tested these here. (Will do so shortly.) --Mara 12:20, 7 September 2006 (EST)
Okay, excluding templates from category listings is fairly easy using . In order to exclude these genres from being listed under IFWiki:Genre and Games (style guide), we'll need to have someone install the ParserFunctions extension.
If this proves too much of a hassle, a more straight-forward approach would be to create two pairs of genres, say {{drama}} and {{dramanc}} (no category). In any case, I find manually listing the genre categories a bit too redundant, esp. as they appear near the end of the article. --Mara 13:26, 7 September 2006 (EST)
I've gone ahead and created the {{*nc}} counterparts and revised IFWiki:Genre and Games (style guide) to reflect this change; the templates also no longer appear listed under their respective genres. For the moment this editorial ideosyncrasy isn't documented; if it's likely the {*nc} variants will appear on non-game pages, it probably should be. What are your thoughts on this? Have I made a satisfactory compromise?
This doesn't lift the burden for games with articles and such; perhaps this should be integrated into the templates themselves? Something along the lines of {{drama|Game, The}}, perhaps?
