How It Begins

We're treated to a short and unusual vignette, and then realize it was just a dream. Eugene Oregon wakes up on a futon in his living room. A loud crash outside arrests his attention.

It's probably no big deal.

Notable Features

  • Narcolepsy is written in first person singular.
  • Eugene dozes off uncontrollably at key points in the story and experiences a (random) dream.
  • The screen in divided into two sections:
    • the command the prompt, and the game's main text, and
    • Eugene's thoughts, and the currently active conversation thread.
  • You move around by going to places Eugene names in his thoughts; compass directions are rarely needed.
  • The game consists of three strongly differentiated story branches named after characters in Tapestry.
  • Narcolepsy is rife with in-jokes and references to other interactive fiction, such as 9:05 and I-0 (both by Adam Cadre), and Tapestry (among others[examples needed]).
