==How It Begins==
You are nowhere, and it is dark. You are carrying a broken flashlight, a closed bag, two metal rods, and some pocket lint.

==Notable Features==
* The main gimmick of ''No Room'' is that the author didn't program any [[room]]s for the [[player character]] to be in. By default, the PC is stuck in [[Inform]]'s pseudo-location, [[Darkness]]. Thus, in a sense, this isn't a "one-room game", but a no room game, hence the meaning of the game's [[title]].
== How It Begins ==
It has been decades since an apocalyptic world war, with the remaining humans trying to rebuild civilization. An old prophecy says that, somewhere on an island on the Pacific Ocean, there lies hidden a missile called "Pandora's Box", which will soon launch in order to destroy the remnants of humanity. You arrived onto the island in a helicopter in order to destroy this doomsday device, but you have been shot down by an automatic gun and barely managed to jump out on a parachute. You are now in an empty meadow. There is nothing in your inventory.

The game in total consists of 1600 locations, the vast majority of which are featureless and empty.

A collaborative series of games (mostly adventure games) by numerous different authors, which revolves around an imaginary town, Reality-On-The-Norm. The setting, storyline and cast of the series are expanded with each game, thus creating a virtual "book" made of independent yet coherent chapters.
The concept was started by members of the [http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/ Adventure Game Studio] community, and was initiated by [[Ben Croshaw]]'s graphical adventure ''Lunchtime of the Damned'' (2001).
==How It Begins==

''FooM'' is a text adaptation of the 1993 shooter game ''Doom'', containing a recreation of the level "E1M1: Hangar" from the original game. It is supposedly made by "di Software", a spoof of the ''Doom'' developer id Software.

You are a space marine, wielding a pistol with some bullets and carrying a lamp. You are standing at the entry bay to the hangar. Your goal, much like in ''Doom'', is to survive the monsters roaming the hangar and find the level exit.

==Notable Features==
* The game mechanics aim to mimic the original ''Doom''. In particular:
** The player has a health meter. Whenever the player is in a room with some enemies, they will attack the player every turn, taking away a random amount of health. If health drops down to zero, the game is over.
** Picking up armour increases the player's resilience to attacks.
** Various items (health bonuses, armor bonuses, green armor, medikit) can be picked up to replenish health and armor. They don't stay in the player's inventory but instantly vanish.
** Various weapons are available in the game, which do varying amounts of damage to enemies. The weapons have limited ammo, which can be replenished by picking up ammunition or weaponry. If the player's current weapon runs out of ammo, the PC will immediately switch to another gun.
** Some rooms have explosive barrels in them, which can damage enemies when shot.
** Secret passages corresponding to these in the original ''Doom'' are present.
** Cheat codes can be used. They mimic those in the original ''Doom'' (e.g. iddqd — immortality, idfa — all weapons), although "id" needs to be replaced with "di".
** Upon completing the game, the score (percentage of kills/items/secrets obtained) is displayed.
* A [[hunger puzzle|hunger mechanic]] is implemented as well, which seems to be an oversight, as it has nothing to do with ''Doom''.
==How It Begins==
You are standing just inside the doorway of a girl's bedroom. How rude of you to intrude here! I don't approve of this at all. I am very concern about what you might do here, since there are no police or laws in this place. Still, theres nothing I can do to stop you. I am just a computer program, a slave to your will. If you tell me what you want to look at or do, I must help you carry out your wishes, if they are possible and if I understand you.....

You are in a bedroom. There is a door in the south wall. The walls are adourned with junior high pennants and pictures of rock stars. A young girl is sitting at a desk in one corner. She's wearing what appears to be some kind of school uniform. Her white miniskirt fits tightly around her little butt. it's so short that you are sure you could catch a glimpse of her panties if she would bend over.

her white blouse has butons down the front. Through her thin cotton blouse you can see that underneath her blouse she is wearing a white bra. You can see the nubs of little girlish breasts pressing out against the thin material of her bra and blouse, straining at the buttons of her blouse. There is an embroidered school emblem on her blouse above the left breast.

Suddenly the pretty girl notices you standing in the doorway. She is startled and alarmed to so a strange man here.

'''WARNING''': This game contains sexual acts and violence.

==Notable Features==
*Despite only being a demo this is arguably the most notorious work of AIF.
*This game was never finished and it is not recommended that money be sent to the address in the readme file as asked.
==How It Begins==

==Notable Features==
==How It Begins==
You are a guest on a masquerade, who has somehow ended up involved into a duel with the countess. You are now in the palace's garden, along with the countess, your second (Ferdinand) and the countess's second (Onegin). You are carrying a playscript and a cutlass, and you are wearing a jester's motley.

There is no chance to win this duel, but after a few deaths you are given a hint to "wake up". Once you do, you find yourself back in the past, with an opportunity to change the duel's outcome.

==Notable Features==
* 25 different endings, depending on the player's actions.
* Only a small selection of verbs is available to the player at any given time; they are listed in the "playscript" item in the inventory. Special verbs become available, depending on what costume the player character is wearing.
* Instead of the standard compass directions, the directions available in the game are "past", "future", "clockwise" and "counter-clockwise".

'''XYZZYnews''' was an [[interactive fiction]] publication — "the magazine for interactive fiction enthusiasts" — and website edited by [[Eileen Mullin]]. There were 20 issues published from 1995 to 2001, plus two e-newsletters in 2001. Issues were usually available in both plain text and PDF formats. Some issues were published in HTML as well on the XYZZYnews website, although some of those versions have been phased out.

The XYZZYnews website also hosted the [[XYZZY Awards]] (from 1996 to 2008) and [[IntroComp]] (from 2002 to 2008).

The last update on the front page of XYZZYnews.com appears to have been made in 2009. The last available Wayback Machine snapshot of the front page is from October 2016. By the end of 2016, the site had gone offline.

While backups of the site were previously available at the Internet Archive Wayback Machine, as of July 2018 the backups are hidden from public view due to a robots.txt file put up by the current domain owner (a cybersquatter).
You are a "cool enby", wearing a hat, tie, and sunglasses. In front of you is someone named "Bilbert", who explains that he is afflicted by some vaguely described problem.

"'''Guess-the-verb'''" (sometimes [[abbreviations|abbreviated]] as '''GTV''') is the name of a particular fault in game design where although the [[player]] has correctly guessed what he is meant to do, the game's [[parser]] does not understand unless he uses a particular and possibly non-obvious way to phrase the [[command]]. For example, if there is a crate to be opened with a crowbar and the only way to open it is to "pry crate with crowbar", other actions like "open crate with crowbar" give a misleading response.

Some games, such as ''[[The Edifice]]'' ([[Lucian Smith]], 1997, [[Z-code]]) and ''[[Ad Verbum]]'' ([[Nick Montfort]], 2002, Z-code) intentionally include guess-the-verb puzzles to good effect but in contexts where the puzzles are explicitly ''about'' language.

==Solution==
* Plenty of [[Beta-testing]].
* A good [http://thesaurus.reference.com thesaurus] can also come in handy.
* Play plenty of IF to get a feel for the sort of verbs considered standard - which may not always be the standard library ones.
* When coding synonyms, make them actual synonyms instead of giving responses along the lines of 'Try INSCRIBE rather than WRITE.' It's just polite.
* Include a special verbs list in your Help and/or About menus. If these verbs are going to be used a lot, draw attention to those menus in the banner text.

==Game homages==
* ''[[ADRIFT-O-Rama]]'' ([[Dana Crane]] as "Mystery"; 2003; ADRIFT 4) features "Guess the Verb Mountain" as the penultimate hole of a novelty miniature golf course.
* ''[[Guess the Verb!]]'' ([[Leonard Richardson]]; 2002; Z-code) uses the phrase as the instruction in a surreal carnival game.

'''MobyGames''' is an online database of video games from many different platforms, with all content submitted by users and verified by approvers. Each entry contains a description of the story and gameplay, release info, and usually additional data such as screenshots, author credits or trivia. The database includes information on numerous interactive fiction games, both commercial and freeware releases.

Up until July 2015, the website only accepted standalone games, but not platform-independent works that require an interpreter, such as [[Z-machine]] or [[TADS]] works. Nevertheless, certain such works were submitted into the database by stretching the rules. On July 2015, the "platforms" ''[[Glulx]]'', ''Z-machine'', ''TADS'' and ''[[Hugo]]'' were added, allowing to finally add such games in a "proper" way. As of 2017, however, many older entries for IF works still need to be assigned to their proper platform.

The site also contains several articles written by contributors, though currently they are not available for browsing and can only be viewed by going to the URL directly. One notable article pertaining to interactive fiction is [http://www.mobygames.com/featured_article/feature,27/ Something about Interactive Fiction] by [[Terrence Bosky]] (April 2006).
==How It Begins==
It is November 1997. A month ago your husband, Michael, had learned about a heretofore unknown branch of his family, and an inheritance waiting for him. Thus you have packed your things and arrived here, into the coastal village of Anchorhead, where the mansion of Michael's mysterious ancestors awaits its new residents.

The game begins as you are standing on the streets of Anchorhead, with the task of retrieving the mansion keys from the real estate agent's office, while your husband waits in the university. However, the agent doesn't seem to be in her office. It is raining. You are carrying an umbrella, wearing a trenchcoat over your clothes, and you have a wedding ring on your finger.

The game is set within H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos, and several plot points are clearly inspired by specific Lovecraft stories.

==Trivia and Comments==
*According to an [http://www.game-couch.com/features/2006/12/interview_mike_gentry/ interview on Game Couch], Michael Gentry plans a new version of Anchorhead that will be written in Inform 7.
==How It Begins==
You're almost there -- 99 points out of 100 and what looks to be a run-of-the-mill troll on the bridge puzzle. Should be trivial for an adventure game god like you. And besides, any puzzle with a logical solution can't be <nowiki>*too*</nowiki> hard to solve. All you have to do is get past the troll, and you will have won.

==Notable Features==
* There is only a single puzzle, which is (depending on your point of view) either unfair, a comment on interactive fiction conventions, or both.
* The authors write, in the game: ''This game is not impossible, but it is very difficult. In fact, the authors suspect that few (if any) will be able to solve it the direct way; i.e., by using the clues in the game and common sense to figure out how to solve the puzzles.''
* According to [[Carl Muckenhoupt]]: ''Written as an example of how not to write games. Specifically, the thesis it seeks to prove is that it is possible for a puzzle to have a completely logical solution, and yet be nearly impossible to solve except by randomly guessing commands. This was the centerpiece of a heated debate on rec.arts.int-fiction. Not meant to be played and enjoyed.''
==How It Begins==
You play a teenage girl, brought to a run-down motor court in the Deep South of the USA by your aunt, who is acting mysteriously. Aunt Caroline has shut herself in the bathroom. You are in the somewhat dilapidated Cabin Five at the Eternal Springs resort, carrying nothing and wearing clothes. Before long you'll meet the fat, slimy proprietor, Beauregard Phelps, and a varied cast of characters who have gathered at Eternal Springs for reasons that aren't initially clear.
== How It Begins ==

A collaborative series of games (mostly adventure games) by numerous different authors which revolves around an imaginary town, Reality-On-The-Norm. The setting, storyline and cast of the series is expanded with each game, thus creating a virtual "book" made of independent yet coherent chapters.

The concept was started by members of the [http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/ Adventure Game Studio] community, and had been initiated by [[Ben Croshaw]]'s graphical adventure ''Lunchtime of the Damned'' (2001). Though Reality-On-The-Norm (RON) begun as a graphical game concept, it has spawned several fan fiction stories and text adventure games as well.

==How It Begins==
You are a nameless adventurer who plans to energize the Primary Source with the head of St. John
the Baptist, a powerful spiritual object, and thus unleash enough creativity for the new [[Speed-IF|SpeedIF]]. Unfortunately, the heretics of the Quebecois Iconoclast Society stole not only ''your'' head of the Baptist, but eleven others from all over the globe.

That's why you've broken into their secret storehouse and are now carrying twelve different heads of St. John the Baptist. Your task is to discover which head is truly the saint's and take it back to the Source.

==Notable Features==
* Randomized solution.
* One location uses non-standard directions ([[xyzzy]] and widdershins) instead of the usual compass [[direction]]s.

==Trivia and Comments==

You are Bradford Scotts, a famous musician who is looking for a peaceful retreat to work on his new album without being harassed by fans. The backwater town of Reality-On-The-Norm seemed to be just the place for you. You are standing on Reality's main street, carrying no items with you.

You are planning to purchase a house in the town, but you need to get permission from the mayor first.

You are standing in a bright white room, with nothing inside save for a computer, a locked door and a large book. You are wearing a lightweight armor, but carrying nothing in the inventory. Your first task is to find a way to exit the room.

Throughout the game the player explores two buildings (a generic futuristic building and a medieval castle) where he will occasionally solve simple puzzles to get from room to room. Allegorical monsters representing various sins are occasionally encountered, and need to be killed with the appropriate weapon.
==How It Begins==
An introduction screen tells you (the user) that you have just been hired to a company called "Happitec". You have recently moved because of the job and there seems to be some minor details you must sort out, mainly getting your mail. The objective of the game is therefore to achieve mail ownership. The starting zone of the game is your new home which includes two rooms. You are in the front room which features the front door and the way to the other room of the house. After having completed the first command which makes time pass the door bell rings.
==How It Begins==
You might be anyone. You are standing in the forest, outside a small brick building which is a well-house for a spring. Inside the building, you can easily find some keys, tasty food, a shiny brass lamp, and an empty bottle. If you explore the surrounding area, you will discover a locked steel grate set in a depression. You have no obvious goals, but you might want to open the grate and explore underground.
Also, a summary or overview of differences between all the versions would be a nice thing to have handy. -- [[User:Dswxyz|David Welbourn]] 15:52, 29 May 2006 (EST))''

According to [[Baf's Guide]], the game is also known by all these titles: Abenteuer, ADVENT, Adventure in Humongous Cave, Aventura, Aventure, Avontuur, Colossal Adventure - Jewels of Darkness, Colossal Cave, nuntalyli'u, Original Adventure.

===Original version===
* ''Adventure'' ([[William Crowther]]; YEAR?; FORTRAN).
** {{ifarchive|games/source/|adv_crowther.zip}} - Long believed lost, this was found from a backup of Don Wood's student account thanks to the efforts of [[Dennis Jerz]]. Included are three versions of the Fortran-IV source code, along with two versions of the data file. Also included are Fortran-77 versions of the source code, converted to Fortran-77 by [[Matthew Russotto]].

The original version was written by Crowther for his two daughters.

====What year?====
* Baf's Guide lists the release year as 1976.
* According to ''[[Compute!'s Guide to Adventure Games]]'' by [[Gary McGath]], William Crowther wrote the preliminary version of ''Adventure'' in 1975, in FORTRAN, on a DEC PDP-10 computer, and made it available nationwide via ARPAnet.
* [[IFRO]] lists the release year as 1972, and the platform as FORTRAN.
* According to [http://www.rickadams.org/adventure/a_history.html A history of 'Adventure'] by [[Rick Adams]], in 1972, William and his wife Pat were co-workers for Bolt, Beranek and Newman in Boston. They were also cavers. When the Crowthers' marriage ended, William felt estranged from his daughters, and decided to write for them a computer simulation of his caving experiences combined with elements borrowed from [[Dungeons and Dragons]], a [[role-playing game]] that he also had been playing.
* Wikipedia doesn't attempt to date the original, noting only that Crowther was a caver in 1972, and that the Don Woods version was written in 1976.
* [http://jerz.setonhill.edu/if/canon/Adventure.htm Colossal Cave Adventure (c. 1975)] by [[Dennis G. Jerz]], notes that sources set the date anywhere from 1968 to 1977. Also: "In response to an e-mail query, Crowther put it at 1975, 'give or take a year'." In [http://brain.lis.uiuc.edu:2323/opencms/export/sites/default/dhq/vol/001/2/000009.html Somewhere Nearby is Colossal Cave], Jerz argues "...Crowther wrote the game during the 1975-76 academic year and probably abandoned it in early 1976", with the Woods version released in early 1977.

A story concept that revolves around an imaginary town with numerous mainstay characters, which different authors attempt to depict by creating their own individual games in addition to the previous ones, thus creating a virtual "book" made of independent yet coherent chapters.
