An unsuccessful conclusion to an IF work, in which important goals have not been achieved. While loss is usually signaled by a message such as "You have died!", in a game world that incorporates the afterlife, or a plot that permits heroic self-sacrifice, the death of the PC does not automatically entail a loss.
