How it begins

The game opens in the living room of an apartment, with a cat, sofa, lit cigarette, and Christmas tree. The player cannot exit the room except by falling out of the window - which results in losing.

Notable features

The game has no spatial control, and interactivity with objects is extremely limited. Rather than having traditional IF commands like spatial navigation and item examination/pickup, it merely gives the player a choice to "struggle" or "breathe". Occasionally, there are more options like "throw Chrismas tree" or "push sofa", but even then they seldom work. In addition, the player's current in-game state(calm, desperate, or out-of-control) is displayed at the top of the game screen in the form of different sweater colors(blue, red, and gray, respectively).

While the game appears to revolve around the player's attempt to remove a sweater that has clung to them, the author states that the object is actually to make the character pass out without falling out of the window. This is accomplished by struggling when away from the window, and breathing when near it. The two commands cause the player to gain and lose control, respectively. The player can also move the sofa to block the window(albeit ineffectively, as it is still possible to fall out of it), or throw the tree to the floor and trip themselves - but, as stated before, these options are rare and seldom work. Occasionally, the player will step on their cat's tail, but this has no effect on the game itself.

It runs online in Java.

Breathe was written for a Christmas-themed IF competition called "Text the Halls", hosted by the blog TIGSource.
