Natural language processing

From IFWiki

Field of artificial intelligence concerning the processing (but not understanding- a much harder task) of natural human language. NLP includes converting between text and speech, automated translation, and generation of natural language. Despite the difficulties, substantial progress has been made, for example, in speech recognition.

The impact of fully-fledged NLP has been limited in IF. The processing and limited understanding in modern parsers tends to be achieved by simple techniques on a very limited subset of natural language. Speech-to-text promises vocal input of commands; text-to-speech (especially screen readers) opens up IF to the visually impared.
