How it begins
Your name is Chris Banks and like most people your life has its share of ups and downs. The good and the bad mingle together in day to day affairs leaving a whole that is more than just a sum of its parts. You've always been a "glass is half full" kind of guy and given a choice you'd rather focus on the good things and leave the bad to take care of themselves.
It's easy to see the good in life at the moment as you open your eyes and greet the sight of the springtime sunshine streaming in the window through the shades, painting stripes across the bed. Looking to your left you see the prime example of good in your life. Your wife Jessica is still asleep, her face a picture of calm repose. You think, as you do nearly every time you see her, how lucky you are to have her by your side.
Of course it's not all sunshine and beautiful women. You do have your share of the bad to balance the good. You live in a crappy little one-bedroom apartment where the two of you have lived since you were married two years ago. You're a songwriter by trade and while you have sold a few, you still need Jess's job to keep the two of you above poverty level.
But once again, every cloud has a silver lining and this one is in the form of a new song that you just finished. It's the best you've written and you already have a meeting lined up to sell it to a very well known artist. If that goes through (and you have no reason to think it won't) then your dreams of making it big could finally be here.
Yes, things are looking good, you think to yourself. A beautiful wife, on the brink of a great career, all in all, the future looks bright indeed.
If you only knew how ironic your choice of words were. Your future may indeed be bright -- eventually. But first, although you didn't know it at the time, you were about to spend some time in the dark.
