How it begins

First, the game first asks you for your name, suggesting "Tommy Atkins" as the default.

Second, a quote from In Flanders Fields: The 1917 Campaign by Leon Wolff on how horrible the First World War was.

Third, a warning that the game contains strong graphic violence and coarse language.

You are in Suicide Ditch; explosions and gunfire seem to be coming from everywhere. In the chaos, you see walls, sandbags, No Man's Land, duckboard planks, a rat, bullet casings, the door over the dug-out, and the fire-step. Private Smythe cowers. Corporal Butcher mans the Vickers gun, cursing as he fires. You are wearing your Brodie helmet, boots, pack, uniform, respirator, and a sheath, and carrying your Lee-Enfield rifle.
