How it begins
First there is a line of Latin text, followed by a quote by Hesiod.
You are a fifteen-year old girl, a patrician's daughter, wearing your stola, slip, and sandals, and carrying a parasol and a scroll. You are sitting on the bench in the peristylium (a courtyard garden) of Marcus Terentius Varro's house in Rome. The season is summer, and the hour is noon. The garden contains a fountain, flowers, and a shrine.
You accompanied your father here on a trip, but now it seems you have some time to kill while the men converse. While you are quite happy to just read and enjoy the summer sun, Varro has generously allowed you to explore his museum, if you wish.
