How it begins

You are a goat, a grey-fawn Toggenburg with two thick curling horns and a smart beard. You are in a goat shed with your herd; you can also see the feeding trough (containing feed), the door, the square hole that serves as a window, and filthy straw on the floor.

The farm is in Cumbria, a county in the northwest part of England. More importantly, it's June 2001 during the Foot and Mouth epidemic. The UK government agency DEFRA (the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) has taken to culling farm animals preemptively. Even though you and your herd are uninfected, a man from DEFRA has arrived to slaughter you and your herd. Neither the farmer's protests nor the promise that the courts will issue a reprieve tomorrow has helped. The only one who can delay the culling is you.
