How it begins

You dream, yet again, this unwanted dream of a writhing black space and the wail and backlit face of an unknown child. You hate the sound. Suddenly all is white and the unseen child asks, Do you know WHY you hate the sound?... I've waited a long time. White merges with black into gray. Kristen... your child is waiting.

Suddenly awake, you realize you're on the phone in your perfectly normal apartment and the voice is saying, "You have a child waiting for you in Gainesville." And then they hang up. Ridiculous. You don't have a child. And even though you're certain you've never heard of any Gainesville, you're equally sure you know where it is, and by the time your consciousness catches up, you're already dressed and driving there.

You are Kristen, 24 years old and 135 pounds of muscle. You're wearing your trenchcoat and carrying your handgun (a Sig Sauer P229 with 8 rounds in the clip) and your keyring. You're on the outskirts of Gainesville where your nearly useless car failed to kill you. Trees obscure any view of the town, but you know it's to the north.
