How to Play

This game was implemented with Z-Code version 6, and includes graphics. It's a bit tricky to play this game on modern systems.

To begin, you’ll need a Z-code interpreter that supports Z6 games; most Z-code interpreters don’t support that version. Here, we'll provide instructions to launch the game with graphics using Frotz.

  • Browser: you can play in-browser with Infocom Frotz
  • Windows: You can use Windows Frotz
  • macOS: You can use Frotz to run it, but you'll need to install Homebrew in order to install it. Once it's installed, you can run "brew install frotz" on your Terminal. Then, you can use the "sfrotz" command to launch the graphical SDL version of Frotz.

To play, download the latest version from The Obsessively Complete Infocom Catalog, zork0-r393-s890714.z6. You'll then need to download its graphics files separately as ZorkZero.blb from the IF Archive.

Place both files in the same folder, and rename ZorkZero.blb to zork0-r393-s890714.blb. (The name of the blb should match the name of your z6 file.) Then, launch the Z6 file. On Windows, you can double-click the file. On macOS, run "sfrotz zork0-r393-s890714.z6".

Frotz will look for a blb file with a matching name in the same folder, and display the game with graphics.
